Roblox Keyboard & Mouse Controls Explained (Beginner Guide)

Hi, George here.
Are you brand new to Roblox and playing on a computer… but when you enter a game you just stand there with no idea what to do?

No instructions.
No movement.
No clue how to actually play.

If that sounds familiar, don’t worry—this beginner guide will show you exactly how to move, interact, and control your character in Roblox using a keyboard and mouse.

Basic Roblox Movement Controls

Let’s start with the super-basic controls every beginner needs.

Walking Keys (WASD)

  • W → Move forward

  • S → Move backward

  • A → Move left

  • D → Move right

These four keys alone let you walk around most Roblox games.

Jumping & Sprinting

  • Spacebar → Jump

  • Shift + Move → Sprint (run faster)

  • Ctrl → Crouch (only in some games)

Game developers can change controls, but WASD + Spacebar are standard in most Roblox experiences.

Mouse Controls in Roblox

Looking Around

  • Hold Right Mouse Button and move the mouse to rotate your view.

Interacting

  • Some games use Left Mouse Button to interact with objects.

Zooming

  • Mouse Wheel → Zoom in and out

If you zoom in too far and get stuck in first-person view, simply scroll the wheel backward to return to normal.

Interaction Keys You Should Know

Different games use different keys, but these are common:

  • E → Interact (talk, open, edit, etc.)

  • F → Alternate interact key in some games

  • R → Reload (in shooter-style games)

  • Q → Ability or dodge (varies by game)

  • G → Grab or drop items (sometimes used)

Inventory & Number Keys

Items you collect appear in your inventory bar at the bottom of the screen.

  • Number keys 1–9 and 0 → Select inventory slots

  • Press the same number again → Put the item away

Some games also use:

  • I or B → Open backpack/inventory

Player List, Map, and Chat

Player List

  • Tab → Show or hide the player list.

Map

  • M → Open the map (if the game has one).

Chat

  • / (forward slash) → Start typing in chat

  • Esc → Exit chat or open the game menu

Roblox Menu & Settings Shortcuts

Press Esc to open the main Roblox menu where you can:

  • View players

  • Change settings

  • Respawn (R)

  • Leave the game (L)

  • Resume play (Esc)

You’ll also find help information and keyboard shortcuts here.

Extra Keys Sometimes Used in Roblox Games

These vary by experience, but you may see:

  • F12 → Record video

  • Alt + 1 → Screenshot

  • F9 → Developer console

  • F10 → Graphics level

  • F11 → Fullscreen

  • Z, X, C, V → Special abilities in some games

Camera Zoom with Keyboard

Some games allow:

  • I → Zoom in

  • O → Zoom out

Most players prefer using the mouse wheel instead.

Helpful Beginner Tip: Getting Out of Chairs

If your character sits in a chair and won’t move:

➡️ Press the Spacebar to jump out.

This is a very common beginner mistake!

Computer vs Mobile vs Console

This guide covers Roblox on a computer.

  • Mobile → Mostly tap controls

  • Console → Controller buttons

I’ll cover mobile controls in a separate guide.

Learning the basic Roblox keyboard and mouse controls makes every game easier and more fun.

Once you’re comfortable with:
